Distributing an estate according to the prescribed Qurʾānic shares is a religious obligation, yet the rules of Islamic inheritance can be intricate and easy to misunderstand. Al-Mawārīth exists to make these rules clear and accessible, helping you understand not only what each heir receives, but also why.
Al-Mawārīth is an educational initiative dedicated to one of the most important, and often overlooked, sciences of Islam: the law of inheritance, ʿilm al-farāʾiḍ.
It did not begin as a website. It began with workshops and khuṭab delivered to communities across Melbourne, where its founder, Fareez Ahmed, a student of Islamic knowledge, was conducting a series on janāzah preparation and the matters that follow a Muslim's death.
Those sessions repeatedly revealed the same gap. Families knew that Islam prescribes specific rules for the distribution of an estate, yet few understood the rules themselves, and fewer still knew how to apply them while living under Australian law. The series therefore expanded to include workshops on Islamic inheritance: what Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) has legislated and how Muslims living in the West can uphold those rulings.
From this teaching emerged the first practical tool: Meeras, the Bequest & Islamic Will Generator for Australian Muslims, developed around Australian legal requirements so that a Muslim's final wishes could be both Sharīʿah-compliant and legally enforceable.
As Meeras reached more Muslims, a broader need became clear. This challenge is not unique to Australia. Muslims across Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand face similar questions about balancing religious obligations with local legal systems, while growing Muslim communities across Africa and Asia need clear, trustworthy knowledge that is accessible when they need it.
Al-Mawārīth was created to meet that wider need: a platform where Muslims, wherever they live, can learn the science of inheritance and calculate each heir's share with confidence.
At its heart is a simple conviction: every Muslim should be able to understand, not merely accept, how an estate is divided.
We present authentic rulings from the Qurʾān and the Sunnah, drawing on the established Sunni schools of jurisprudence, and translate them into plain-language lessons and practical tools that make farāʾiḍ easier to learn and apply.
Because calculation alone was never the goal. The goal is to prevent the injustice that can arise from ignorance of these laws, equip families with knowledge before grief arrives, and revive a science that is too often forgotten precisely when it matters most.
The rulings of Islamic inheritance are the same in Melbourne, Karachi, Kuala Lumpur, and Cairo; what differs is the surrounding civil law and legal framework. In shāʾ Allāh, our vision is to extend Islamic inheritance education and the supporting tools needed to understand and apply these rulings, region by region.

We are pursuing this mission in deliberate stages: first across Southeast Asia, Southern Africa, and Oceania; then across North America, Europe, and the wider African continent; and, in the following decade, across South America and the rest of Asia. Bi-idhnillāh, we will continue adapting our teaching and tools to the legal context of each country until they reach the whole Ummah.
Fareez Ahmed is a student of Islamic knowledge with a particular focus on the fiqh of Islamic inheritance (farāʾiḍ). He has undertaken five years of formal Islamic studies under Shaykh Atif Ahmed, Shaykh Waqeeh Ali, and Shaykh Adeel Arfeen of the Al Midrar Institute, as well as Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Zubair at SDN Studios. He has also pursued more than four years of informal study through short courses with scholars from India and Australia. His studies have covered the core Islamic sciences, including ʿaqīdah, fiqh, tafsīr, ḥadīth, and sīrah, with a particular focus on farāʾiḍ. This grounding shaped his interest in the sciences and practical matters surrounding a Muslim's passing.
Professionally, Fareez is a software engineer with 15 years of experience, specialising in web application architecture, front-end engineering, and responsive, accessible design. He also holds an ISTQB software-testing certification. His technical background gave him the skills to turn complex rules and calculations into practical digital tools.
Alongside his professional work, Fareez has served in various capacities within several community organisations, including iCAN (Islamic Circle of Australia and New Zealand), MINA, GainPeace Australia, and Tamvic. He also occasionally serves as a khaṭīb and public speaker at community events.
His study of farāʾiḍ and his involvement in the Muslim community led him to conduct workshops across Melbourne, Australia, on janāzah preparation and Islamic inheritance, helping families understand and apply rulings that are often overlooked.
Al-Mawārīth brings these experiences together: Islamic knowledge, software engineering, and community service. Fareez founded and built Al-Mawārīth to make the science of farāʾiḍ clearer, more accessible, and easier for families to understand and apply.

She holds an Associate Degree in Education from the International Open University, a B.A. in Islamic Studies from the International University of Africa, with a major in Sunnah and ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth, and an M.A. in Fiqh from Al-Madinah International University.
